At Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming Bridgewater, grooming is more than just baths and brushes—it’s about building trust, creating bonds, and sometimes, saving lives.
Salon Manager and expert groomer Cola Butts recently demonstrated just how powerful that connection can be when she noticed something unusual during a routine appointment with a doodle named Diogee.
“I’ve been grooming Diogee for about ten months,” Cola said. “He likes to sing during his appointments, so he quickly became one of my favorites. We’ve built a lot of trust over time.”
That bond proved critical. Cola noticed abnormal bruising on Diogee’s skin—something his family hadn’t yet seen. “The color and pattern just didn’t look right,” she explained. “I’ve seen a lot in this job, and part of our responsibility is noticing when something looks off.”
She notified his owners right away. That very day, Diogee underwent emergency surgery for a hidden internal issue that could have been life-threatening if left untreated.
"This could have ended very differently," said co-owner Lorie Santos. "Cola’s attention to detail and care made all the difference. It's a powerful reminder of how grooming isn’t just about looking good - it’s about staying healthy and even saving lives."
Cola has worked with Woof Gang for nearly three years, and she says the connection she forms with each pet is the best part of her job. “I love watching a nervous pup become more confident over time, or seeing them wag their tail when they feel fresh and clean.” she said. “It’s also incredibly rewarding to help dogs stay healthy through regular grooming care.”
She enjoys creative grooming when pet parents are up for something fun but also takes pride in breed-specific trims that showcase a dog’s natural beauty—like teddy bear cuts on doodles or a classic schnauzer pattern.
When she’s not at the salon, Cola can be found spending time outdoors with her dog Fendi or attending grooming expos to continue learning. “This industry is always evolving,” she said. “I love keeping my skills sharp.”
Her advice for pet parents? “Brushing between appointments helps prevent matting and skin issues—and never hesitate to ask your groomer questions. We’re here to help you care for your pup in every way we can.”
Diogee’s story is a powerful example of what it means to lead with care.
"We are incredibly proud of Cola and thankful that Diogee’s story has a happy outcome," Santos said. "It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do."
